Joaquin Baldwin

Nature and light fascinate me. My devotion towards photography began long ago, fueled by my desire to see and understand the cosmos, and my admiration for science and the natural world. I see photography as a challenge to myself: a way to push my limits, to convey the truth of the wonders I may witness, to travel to places unseen, to obsessively observe details, to be patient, to share.

I have a lot of different interests related to the visual arts, so instead of solely focusing in one field, I like to expand my knowledge into diverse areas and let their synergy enhance the breadth of my work. These are my core passions:

I focus mostly on nature photography, from wide landscapes, to astrophotography, to mammals and birds. Exploring different techniques and not being bound by one fixed style is a necessity.

I like to create highly complex conceptual sculptures, using the latest 3D printing techniques and a variety of materials, such as porcelain, brass, nylon, and precious metals.

I made some animated shorts that played in over 300 festivals worldwide, earning over 100 awards. The skills I learned doing animation are my main toolset when modeling complex 3D sculptures.

What I've learned as a photographer and animator I've combined into my specialization at Disney, which is CG Layout: camera and cinematography for animated features.

I was born in Paraguay. At age 19, I moved to the USA to study at the Columbus College of Art & Design, where I received my BFA. Then I moved to California where I got an MFA at the UCLA Animation Workshop.

While at UCLA I created Sebastian's Voodoo, The Windmill Farmer and Papiroflexia: animated shorts which won over 100 awards and honors at festivals and competitions such as Cannes, Student Academy Awards, Student Emmys, USA Film Festival, and many others. I was nominated for an Annie Award in 2008, where my tiny student short was competing against 4 films: from Pixar, Disney, Plympton and Aardman.

I now live in Los Angeles, with two cats and one husband, and work at the Walt Disney Animation Studios as a CG layout artist for feature animation. I've worked in films such as Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, Feast, Frozen and Moana.
